ANSW Country Championships 2008

26th & 27th January - Glendale, Newcastle

The wash-up from Athletics NSW Country Championships saw Blue Mountains Athletics Club take 36 gold, 23 silver and 29 bronze medals for a total tally of 88.  Masters' athlete Julie Smith took five of them in a quality individual performance.  It goes with out saying that we were
the dominant club at this meet.

Athletics NSW have summarised the first three place getters on their website and I have collated all of them for you as a summary in excel in place order.  This I have attached for you to this email.

The Blue Mountains Gazette will report in next week's edition on the meet and our efforts.  I will also update the Club website too.  In the meantime, I have put a few highlights for you below.

We begin with the two athletes that broke the Championship records for their age divisions.  In the 40-49 long-jump, Graeme Mell put in a 5.62 meter long jump to take both the championship record and the gold medal. In the 18 year 1500m, Hollie Emery eased away from Celia Sullohern to take the championship record and gold medal in a time of 4.29.53. Hollie later took out the 800m/1500m double on the Sunday.

The middle distance standout performance of the meet saw Celia Sullohern take three gold medals and silver in a series of dominant performances. Celia took the 16 year gold medals in the 1500m, 3000m and the 2000m steeplechase.  Her 3000m effort was a good one given the mercury had climbed to over 35C by the late evening.  Her silver saw her take second place in the 800m behind Tia Brady of the Hunter.  The latter put Celia under the pump with 120m to go, to record a narrow victory.  The other standout performance in the middle distance came from Morgan Moloney, who took the gold medal in the 14 years 1500m and 3000m.

The second day afternoon saw the running of the 17 years 800m where Michael Sinclair dominated with a superb time of 1.59.76.  This athlete fought a gale in the home straight to round out a competitive performance.  The previous day had seen Michael defeated by Kevin Batt of Gosford in the 1500m.

In open 800m action, Earl O'Brien set out to go sub 2.00 for the event. His opening first lap saw him through in 57 secs, in a performance that should have seen him go under 2 minutes.  The final lap home straight wind changed matters with a final time of 2.02.

The sprint standout performance came from the best 11 year old female 100m/200m athlete in Australia.  Fresh of her national championship sprint wins in Hobart at the end of 2007, the mercurial Blue Mountains Athletics Club athlete, Jenna Heath, took out the 100m and 200m double in a fine effort.  Her 100m was the more dominant effort where she eased away from the field.  The 200m saw her come under pressure from Mercy Agbeze of Gosford at the bend before Jenna eased away with 80 meters to go.

The outstanding walk performances came from Vanessa Ebejer who claimed the female open 3000m title and Tabitha Porley who took the 15 years 1500m walk title.

The jumps saw good victories to Emma Cormack in the high jump with a 1.60 effort (victory on countback) and to Mataya Young who triumphed with 10.75 meters in the triple jump.  She later followed this with the bronze in the 200m.  Michael Cox was also in fine form with 1.90 meters in the 18 year high jump for third place and 5.97 meters in the long for second place.

Making their championships debut were Jemima Herig Parsons, Tiarka Hill and Timothy Kniha.  Jemima took silver medal in the 11 year 800m and Timothy took the bronze in the 10 year 800m run one race earlier. Tiarka took the bronze in the 11 year shot.  All three of these athletes easily made the move from little athletics to the more demanding environment of Senior club athletics.

The club would like to thank the large number of parents that supported the athletes over two long days of athletics competition.  We would also like to single out Coach Joe Ebejer whose athletes single-handedly dominated the walks for BMAC and our middle distance Coach Graeme Heape who oversaw much of the middle distance.

We hope that all enjoyed the weekend and given the size of the team that went, apologies for anyone I have missed.

The Club does ask given the number of performances at this meet that if you believe that you may have broken a senior club record then please peruse the Club website and make a claim.

Inter club resumes this week with the State Open 5000m (Best of luck to both Mel and Hollie in that one) on Thursday night and another meet on Saturday.  Both are at SOPAC.
